Jaw tension and facial massage: choosing your appointment
Jaw tension, massage and exercises: what to discuss before an appointment and when a dentist or doctor should assess your symptoms.

Describe how it feels
Does your jaw feel tired, your forehead tense or your face sensitive? Tell us where you notice it, when it happens and what kind of touch you prefer. You do not have to find an anatomical explanation yourself. We can plan the visit around your comfort, without treating your description as a diagnosis.
External or buccal massage?
Japanese lifting massage uses rhythmic techniques on the outside of the face. Buccal massage also includes work inside the mouth, with your consent and with gloves. Feeling tension around your jaw does not mean you have to choose intraoral work. Discuss your boundaries and choose an appointment you feel comfortable with.
When should someone else assess it?
Contact a dentist or doctor if you have recurring pain, locking or difficulty opening your mouth. Jaw problems may need a different approach from cosmetic facial massage. Tell us about recent dental work or surgery. A comfortable experience on the treatment table does not establish the cause of your symptoms.

During and after your appointment
You can ask to change the pressure, pace or areas treated. Tell us about sharp pain, irritation or discomfort; you do not have to tolerate it. Afterwards, consider whether the visit suited your expectations. Persistent symptoms do not automatically call for stronger or more frequent massage. Let a professional assessment guide the next step.
Jaw tension: finding appropriate treatment
Appropriate care depends on the cause of your symptoms. Tell the clinician about pain and restricted movement. Facial massage may be considered for comfort, but it does not replace an assessment of the jaw joint.

Exercises for jaw tension
Discuss suitable exercises with a dentist or physiotherapist. Movements used for one problem may not suit another. If you have pain or locking, ask for individual guidance rather than starting an intensive jaw exercise routine on your own.
